The San Francisco Conservation Corps (SFCC) is a non-profit job readiness and education program serving young adults between the approximate ages of 18 and 26 who work within crews to address community needs through service and conservation-related work. SFCC job readiness opportunities for young adults include, but are not limited to, landscaping, restoration, installing play structures at public schools and community centers, recycling, and internships. Concurrently and in partnership with the John Muir Charter School, the young adults focus on attaining their High School Diploma and GED or participate in the Corps-to-Career higher education program.
Job Summary
The Full-Time basic Adult Education Teacher is responsible for managing and supervising a classroom of young adult students who have already earned their high school diploma to provide basic skills remediation, four to five days per week, throughout the academic year. This position works with post-diploma students to remediate basic skills in English and Math, assesses strengths, challenges, and opportunities of each student using student-assessment methods as prescribed by SFCC, as directed by the Career Counselor and employed by the teacher him/herself. The Full-Time Adult Basic Education Teacher will work directly with the Career Counselor to create and implement individual learning plans that support and are relevant to each student’s vocational and educational goals. This position is also responsible for mastering, adhering to, and implementing the policies and procedures of the SFCC Employee Manual, Corpsmember Handbook, and SFCC Respectful Workplace policy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
SFCC Academics Program(constant – more than 66% of time): The Full-Time Basic Education Teacher is responsible to provide basic skills remediation to at-risk young adults who have already obtained their high school diploma but may have limited academic skills; utilize a variety of instructional methods to address different learning styles; provide practical academic learning experiences related to life skills, leadership, community organizing, and other appropriate subjects; participate in curriculum development and prepare daily lesson plans to provide well-rounded individualized and group instruction as appropriate; identify and provide opportunities in the classroom for students to demonstrate leadership skills; assess student needs and provide individualized tutoring as necessary.
Supervision, Policies, and Procedures (constant – more than 66% of time): Act as a role model to other Staff and Corpsmembers; ensure that polices and procedures of the SFCC are strictly adhered to; use suitable tools to assess, document, and report student attendance and progress; administer appropriate protocols, procedures, and CM Handbook polices with Corpsmembers.
Administration (frequent – 34-66% of time): Complete all necessary administrative tasks and paperwork efficiently and on time; maintain individual confidential student educational files including work samples, lesson plans, educational progress, attendance sheets and educational service plans; review and recommend necessary and appropriate materials and equipment.
Communication and Relationship Building (constant – more than 66% of time): Communicate and work closely with the Associate Director of Academics and Career Counselor to comply with all applicable federal, state, and school education standards; inform Career Counselor and Case Management staff of issues that affect student progress; work and coordinate with other staff to incorporate practical academic learning experiences related to Life Skills, Leadership, and other relevant subjects; assist in identification of outside resources related to education; maintain professional, open channels of communication with both Corpsmembers and Staff; model public speaking skills and demonstrate cultural competency and sensitivity to diverse populations.
Typical Working Conditions
Typical working conditions involve working in a classroom setting, and often involve working outdoors in all types of terrain and in all types of weather conditions at project sites.
Equipment Used
This position requires frequent operation of agency vehicles to drive to various sites and venues throughout the SF Bay Area, which requires insurability on the SFCC’s driving insurance policy and the ability to operate agency vehicles and navigate by automobile throughout the SF Bay Area.
Minimum Education and Experience Required In addition to the Licenses/Certificates/Testing requirements listed near the top of this job announcement:
Valid and current California teaching credential.
2+ years experience in instruction, lesson plan preparation, delivery, and classroom management.
Experience engaging and motivating young adults who may have many barriers in their lives and come from a wide variety of social, economic, and educational backgrounds
Experience working with and teaching young adults approximately 18-26 years old who may have experienced significant barrier to learning.
Special education experience.
Experience applying innovative education models and implementing e-learning technology in the classroom.
Experience with driver’s education a plus.
Minimum Skills Required
